Regular price $800.00

HISTORY: On May 27, 1966 at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles rising heavyweight star Jerry Quarry squared off against tough Tony Alongi. After ten rounds the fight was declared a draw.  "Unbeaten Jerry Quarry and veteran Tony Alongi - each convinced he's the other's master - expressed hopes today for a third meeting after battling to their second 10 round draw Friday night at the Sports Arena. Both Quarry, 192, Bellflower, and the rangy Alongi, 204, Paterson, NJ, thought they won the bruising rematch, although each had some grudging praise for his opponent. Quarry had to rally in the final two rounds to gain the draw after the taller Alongi had built up a lead with sharp left jabs to the head. The bout was bitterly contested with both fighters complaining to referee Tommy Hart that the other was hitting low and otherwise breaking the rules." -United Press International. Unofficial Pasadena Star-News scorecard - 4-4 Draw. Alongi's manager Lou Duva complained prior to the bout that Quarry was wearing 'Mexican trunks' (high elastic belt, which can be worn over the stomach). Quarry agreed to change them provided Duva bought him a pair, which Duva did so.. Post fight comments- "I threw some good body shots for the first time and I thought I won it. He fought a better fight than he did in New York, but I think I fought better too." -Jerry Quarry. "I was in better shape. I thought I won in New York and I thought I won even bigger this time. I'd like to come back here for a third fight. I think Quarry is a good fighter, but I'm better and have more experience." -Tony Alongi. Offered here is an original, on site poster for this event.
