HISTORY: Sam Langford began his professional boxing career on January 13, 1902 with a 3 round victory over Jack McVicker. Known as "The Boston Tar Baby," Langford had one of the best records in boxing for a man denied a shot at a world title. He amassed victories over Joe Jeanette, Young Peter Jackson, Jim Flynn, Harry Wills, Dixie Kid, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Sam McVey, Gunboat Smith, and Kid Norfolk. He retired after stopping Fireman Jim Flynn in 3 rounds on October 19, 1923. Presented here is an original, first generation photo of Sam Langford in period dress meting and shaking hands with Italian heavyweight Erminio Spalla. Spalla fought from 1919 until 1934 and his opponents included, among many others, Luis Firpo and Gene Tunney. This photo dates to the 1920's.
