James J. Corbett was born on September 1, 1866 in San Francisco, California. He won the World Heavyweight Title from John L. Sullivan on September 7, 1892 in the first gloved heavyweight championship. He fought significant fights with Peter Jackson, Charley Mitchell and Robert Fitzsimmons. He retired after losing to Jim Jeffries on August 14, 1903 with a final record of 11-4-2 with 2 no contests and 7 KO's. Offered here is an original, first generation, large format studio photograph of James J. Corbett as he looked just prior to his fight with Sullivan. The Good Luck wreath in the background sent Corbett off to battle.
