Austin Gibbons was a boxer born on August 19, 1870 in Liverpool, England. He fought from 1885 to 1898. Gibbons was an outstanding lightweight of his day; Some sources report that he started boxing at 14 years old; He won the 126 Pound Championship of America during his career; He was a brother of James Gibbons, a boxer. During his career, Gibbons defeated such men as Bobby Dobbs, Frank Craig, Mike Daly, Andy Bowen, Mike Cushing, Jimmy Liddy, Jack Kenny, Jim Verrall, Jimmy McHale, Martin Snee, Joe Walcott, and Wiley Evans. He died on December 9, 1907. Offered here is a rare, original cabinet card of Austin Gibbons.
This is an original cabinet card of Gibbons in fight pose at the height of his career. By noted photographer John Wood. Wood stamp at lower left of mount. Bold, clear image. Not creased. Edge and corner wear with some chipping at lower left corner. Minor surface wear. Minor stain at lower right corner, otherwise clean. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2."
