HISTORY: Earl was born on 13 June 1934, the fourth child to Mark Hanna and Susie Jane (Brown). Matthews in Tonganoxie, Kansas. Earl was 88 years old. He passed away on 15 October 2022.
Earl received his education in the public schools of Tonganoxie , Harvard University, and Newbury College where he received an Associate Degree in Business. Upon graduation from Tonganoxie High (Class of 52) Earl enlisted in the Navy spending a period of three years earning an Honorable Discharge. While assigned to Naval Station Guam and serving aboard USS Renville (APA-227), Earl was crowned all Navy Lightweight Champion in Boxing. He would later apply his skills in the sport of boxing turning professional in 1955. Earl was employed by Harvard University where he completed a 40 year career. Earl was also a renowned artist in the New England area.
Matthews compiled a professional boxing record of 17-14-1 while fighting between 1955 and 1961 as a lightweight.
