JO Sports, Inc.

Regular price $185.00

HISTORY: On April 9, 1994 at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia WBC Welterweight champion Pernell Whitaker made his second title defense, this against Santos Cardona. Whitaker prevailed winning a 12 round unanimous decision. NY Times-

"Pernell Whitaker scored a unanimous 12-round decision over Santos Cardona tonight before a crowd of 7,868 here at the Scope in his hometown. It was Whitaker's first fight since his hotly debated draw with Julio Cesar Chavez in September. Whitaker (33-1-1) danced on the rare occasions Cardona closed in on him, but generally the World Boxing Council welterweight champion was not compelled to run or hide from the top-ranked challenger. Whitaker threw a strong mix of body and head shots from the outset, but Cardona (29-4) was able to counter with enough shots to cause a little puffiness below Whitaker's right eye by the sixth round. Cardona has been knocked out just once in his 33-fight career and his strong chin was in evidence against Whitaker. The bout, however, proved to be the expected showcase for Whitaker, whose superior vision, concentration and movement were constantly on display and whose adoring fans exploded at his periodic flurries." Offered here is an original, on site poster for this event.
