HISTORY: George "Kid" Lavigne was born in Bay City, Michigan on December 6, 1869. He began his professional boxing career on September 7, 1886 stopping Morris McNally in the first round. On December 14, 1894 he stopped Andy Bowen in the 18th round to win the American lightweight Title. On June 1, 1896 he stopped Dick Burge in the 17th round to win the World Lightweight Title. In othe rsignificant fights during his career he defeated Barbados Joe Walcott twice, fought draws with Frank Erne and Young Griffo and defeated Kid McPartland. He retired after losing a 6 round decision to Dick Nelson on Christmas Day, 1909. Offered here is a rare antique, large format photograph of George "Kid" Lavigne.
