Mayweather, Jr. won a unanimous 12 round decision in defense of his title. Sosa Is Given a Boxing Lesson by Mayweather By Paul Gutierrez, Los Angeles Times, April 20, 2003 He winked. Floyd Mayweather Jr. had been caught by an overhand right and fell into the ropes, forced to grab and hold Victoriano Sosa to stem the attack. There were 45 seconds remaining in the sixth round and the crowd was chanting Sosa's last name, imploring the upset-minded challenger to finish off Mayweather and take his World Boxing Council lightweight title. But while in the clinch, an unconcerned Mayweather looked down at the ringside broadcasting team and winked, as if he knew something. He did. Sosa, often the more exciting and busier fighter, was not landing clean blows, while Mayweather was picking Sosa apart with pristine jabs to the face and stomach. Mayweather weathered the sixth-round storm Saturday night and put on a jab clinic to come away with a one-sided unanimous decision, 118-110, 119-109, 118-110. The Times scored it 117-111. The announcement, though, angered the Selland Arena crowd of 7,255, which was nearly 3,000 less than capacity and witnessing the first world title fight in the city's history. "Don't go by the oohs and ahs," said a fresh-faced Mayweather, who improved to 30-0. "That's not what boxing's about. "A lot of [Sosa's] shots hit me in the arms and shoulders. I'm just happy with my victory. I don't go out there to brag and boast. I mean, he was throwing more punches than me but I was landing more shots." The CompuBox numbers showed Mayweather landing 55% (248 of 448) of his punches while Sosa connected on only 14% (79 of 565). Still, Sosa, a native of Santiago, Dominican Republic, who claims to be related to the Chicago Cubs' right fielder and could have used his purported second cousin's home run swing in the ring, was unimpressed. "I'm very surprised," said Sosa, whose eyes were swollen and whose record dropped to 35-3-2. "He has to give me a rematch. I beat him. "Here in California, I guess you have to kill someone." Or maybe not get tagged so often by jabs. "I could hit him with the jab all day," said Mayweather, who connected on 60% of his jabs (147-246), compared to the 7% (12-182) the wiry Sosa landed. "I hit him with the jab whenever I wanted to." Offered here is an original, HBO poster used to advertise this fight.

FULL DESCRIPTION: This is an original, paper, HBO poster which pictures Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Bold color and print. Mayweather, r. won a unanimous 12 round decision. Associated Press- "The defense was back, just like it used to be. Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s dad was back, too, just like he used to be. And Mayweather was a winner once again -- just like he always is. Mayweather fought as if he had never left the ring, coming back from a year's absence Saturday night to win a unanimous 12-round decision over Robert Guerrero in their welterweight title fight. The game plan was defense, and Mayweather followed it perfectly. With his father directing from the corner after a 13-year absence, he dominated Guerrero in a performance not totally expected at the age of 36. "I needed my father tonight," Mayweather said. "My defense was on point and he told me to stick with my defense and that the less you get hit the longer you last." Mayweather was masterful at times, landing thudding right hands and bloodying Guerrero's face in a performance that mimicked some of his best fights. Mayweather hurt Guerrero on several occasions, including a series of right hands near the end of the eighth round that buckled Guerrero's knees. All three judges scored the bout 117-111. The Associated Press had it 119-109. "We did it again," Mayweather said after earning at least $32 million for his night's work. "I take my hat off to Robert Guerrero. He's a true warrior." If it wasn't terribly pleasing to the crowd of 15,880, it was terribly effective. Mayweather made a fighter who hadn't lost in eight years look befuddled as he danced and moved and shot out right hands with increasing frequency. He remained unbeaten in 44 fights and, more importantly, looked so fresh that he may follow through on his plan to fight again in September. "I was looking for the knockout but I hurt my hand," Mayweather said. "I feel bad I didn't give the fans the knockout." Mayweather was booed at times for not mixing it up more, but he didn't need to. He was content to move and land jabs and right hand leads, while Guerrero grew increasingly frustrated trying to chase him. When Guerrero did hit him, Mayweather quickly got out of the way and, more often than not, landed a right hand of his own. "I landed some good shots on him," Guerrero said. "He's a great fighter. He's slick and quick." The fight at the MGM Grand arena settled into a familiar pattern from the third round on as Mayweather made adjustments and started landing some crisp right leads to Guerrero's head. Guerrero was eager to trade punches, but often couldn't find Mayweather, who had already moved out of range. Before the fight there had been some concern about Mayweather having ring rust after going a year without a fight. But he didn't miss a beat, using his defensive skills to baffle Guerrero and keep him off balance. Mayweather was a 5-1 favorite coming into the fight, but Guerrero was considered dangerous coming off a big win over Andre Berto. Guerrero hadn't lost in eight years, and vowed to be the first to beat Mayweather, now 44-0. But he had never fought Mayweather, who got hit more than normal in his last fight against Miguel Cotto a year ago. "Honestly, Floyd could have danced the whole night," Floyd Mayweather Sr. said. "There wasn't anything he couldn't do in there tonight." Mayweather had crafted much of his career using his defense as his main weapon, and said he turned to his father -- who used to be his trainer -- to regain his old style. "After the Cotto fight I realized my defense wasn't what it should be and I had to hone my skills," Mayweather said. By the fifth round Mayweather's confidence was growing and he began landing some heavy right hands to Guerrero's head. Guerrero kept plodding after him, but paid the price as Mayweather shot counter right hands through his defenses Mayweather was faster and stronger than Guerrero, who was fighting for only the third time at 147 pounds. Mayweather said he hurt his right hand while going after the knockout in the eighth round, but still managed to control the fight round after round. Guerrero (31-2-1) was cut over his left eye in the eighth round, when Mayweather seemed on the verge of stopping him. Ringside punch stats showed Mayweather landing 60 percent of his power punches, an unusually high rate. That included 23 of 30 power punches in the eighth round, when Guerrero was wobbled. All told, Mayweather was credited with landing 195 punches to 113 for Guerrero. "He ran like a chicken," said Guerrero's trainer and father, Ruben. "I thought we were going to go toe-to-toe with him." Robert Guerrero didn't complain about Mayweather's style at all. Not when he wants to fight him again some day. "I'm going to keep fighting and hopefully before Floyd Mayweather retires I'm going to get that shot again," Guerrero said. Mayweather said he planned to fight again in September, a short turnaround for him, as part of a six-fight deal he has with the Showtime network." Offered here is an original, full, unused, on site ticket for this event. Mayweather, Jr. knocked Ortiz out in the 4th round. Floyd Mayweather Jr., who had dominated the first three rounds, looked brilliant in his first fight in 16 months, but that brilliance may be overshadowed by the way he scored a stunning knockout with one second left in the fourth round Saturday night to win a welterweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Some at ringside called it a sucker punch from Mayweather. Others blamed referee Joe Cortez, who did not have his eye on the action. Whatever you want to call it, Mayweather drilled Ortiz in a triumphant return to the ring. Ortiz was getting tagged repeatedly by Mayweather right hands for most of the fight. Mayweather was making it look oh-so easy, as he usually has during a career that obviously will send him to the Hall of Fame. But in the fourth round, Ortiz found some success. He landed a couple of hard shots that had Mayweather shaking his head, as if say he did not feel them. But then Ortiz drove Mayweather into the corner post. Instead of following up with punches, Ortiz drove his head toward Mayweather's face as if to intentionally head-butt him. Cortez immediately called time and deducted a point from Ortiz. Then the fight turned somewhat surreal. As Cortez was calling time, Ortiz -- seemingly acknowledging his wrongdoing -- hugged Mayweather in the corner and even appeared to kiss him. Then Cortez waived them back together and they touched gloves. But with Cortez looking away from the fighters, Mayweather unloaded a left hook and a flush right hand to Ortiz's face. The judges had it 116-111, 116-111 and 115-112, all for Mayweather. Mayweather was The Ring Magazine welterweight champion, and Maidana was the publication's No. 8 welterweight contender. The Ring also ranked Mayweather as the No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Mayweather was a 12-1 betting favorite. One pre-fight media poll favored Mayweather 46-0. This was the 12th appearance and ninth consecutive fight for Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the third appearance for Maidana at the venue. The day before the fight, Mayweather balked at the custom-made gloves Maidana had selected: blue MX Everlast gloves - known as the punchers glove - that matched Argentina’s flag. A fighter's gloves must be approved by his opponent, as well as the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Both the Mayweather camp and the commission objected to the distribution of padding in the gloves, arguing there was too much weight in the wrist area and not enough padding on the knuckles. The commission approved a non-customized red version of the Mexican Everlast (MX) gloves, but the Mayweather camp objected to those as well. "Put him in the same shit as me," said Mayweather, who was going to wear Grant gloves. However, Maidana's camp, notably trainer Robert Garcia, flat-out refused the Grant gloves. With the Mayweather camp threatening to boycott the fight, the dispute was resolved hours before the fight was scheduled to take place. Both camps agreed that Maidana would wear black-and-yellow Powerlock Everlast gloves - known to be worn by fighters with hand problems. At the official weigh-in, Mayweather weighed 146 and Maidana was 146½. On fight night, Maidana rehydrated to 165 pounds compared to Mayweather's 148. Dan Rafael of ESPN reported: Just like Maidana had done against Broner, he roared at Mayweather at the opening bell and never stopped blasting and looking for a knockout. He seemed to have Mayweather out of sorts at various times in the fight, but Mayweather never seemed to be in that much trouble and was able to counter and land accurate left hooks and lead right hands. . . . Maidana's pressure remained intense throughout the fight as he never stopped moving forward and trying to push Mayweather against the ropes. But even though he did, Mayweather countered with quick right hands. . . . As aggressive as Maidana was, Mayweather stood in the pocket and was sharp with his right hand, but Maidana would not stop coming at him and winging overhand rights. Mayweather was cut over the right eye in the fourth round. "That came from a head-butt and I couldn't see for two rounds after the head-butt," Mayweather said. "I had a great cutman in Rafael Garcia and he stopped the bleeding immediately and after I could see again, it didn't bother me." According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Mayweather was guaranteed $32 million and Maidana $1.5 million. Both fighters also shared a portion of the pay-per-view revenue. It was the ninth straight fight in which Mayweather pocketed at least $25 million. According to CompuBox, Maidana set the record for the number of punches thrown and landed against Mayweather. CompuBox has tracked 37 of Mayweather's 46 professional fights. "This was a tough, competitive fight," Mayweather said. "I gave fans an exciting fight. He put pressure on me, and that's when I decided to fight differently. I stood there and fought him. He's a good fighter. I take nothing away from him." "I feel I was robbed. I feel I won," Maidana said. "I trained hard, and I fought a good fight. And I feel that this was an injustice.” Offered here is an original, on site, full, unused ticket for the fight. It took place on June 6, 2021, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The fight reportedly sold more than one million pay-per-view buys. Mayweather started tentatively and defensively, reluctant to throw often and avoiding most of Paul's shots. Toward the end of the first round, Paul unleashed a wild flurry, but all of his punches were blocked by Mayweather's guard. The second round was similar to the first, with Mayweather content with the slow pace of the fight. He finally turned up the offense in the third, opening up with some clean left hooks that rocked Paul's head back, as well as mixing in his trademark pull counter with the right hand. From the fourth round onward, Paul was visibly fatigued and took every opportunity to utilize his weight advantage by tying the smaller Mayweather up in the clinch after every exchange. Despite Paul's constant attempts at neutering Mayweather's offense, the latter continued to dictate the pace of the fight and land the cleaner, more effective punches. Toward the end of the eighth and final round, Paul showboated when it became clear that he had done enough to avoid being stopped as most had predicted would be the case, and that he would survive to hear the final bell. The fight went the full eight-round distance, and no winner was announced. In addition, host casinos Caesars Palace and Wynn Las Vegas reduced the amount of their promised ticket buy by $600,000. Promoter Bob Arum also reduced the top ticket price for the fight from $800 to $700. Mayweather's glove touched the canvas in the second round after he was hit by a short right hook from Judah, but referee Richard Steele didn't rule it a knockdown. Mayweather turned the tide in the fifth round. He landed a strong right that backed up Judah and then got his body shots and hooks going. Mayweather wobbled Judah at the beginning of the seventh and Judah's nose was bleeding. By the ninth, Judah's right eye was swelling and Mayweather was in complete control, outlanding Judah 28-2 in power shots in the round. Late in the tenth round, Judah hit Mayweather with a blatant low blow followed by a punch to the back of the head. As the referee called timeout to give Mayweather a chance to recover, Mayweather's uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather, entered the ring and went after Judah. He was restrained by the referee and a security guard. Yoel Judah, Zab's father and trainer, then entered the ring and threw a punch at Roger. The ring was soon filled with members of the fighter camps and security in a scary free-for-all that came close to sparking a full-scale riot. During the melee, Zab hit Mayweather cornerman Leonard Ellerbe in the back of the head. After several minutes, order was restored and the fight continued. Mayweather cruised in the final two rounds — even embracing Judah before the twelfth round rather than simply touching gloves — instead of continuing to lay punishment on Judah as he had been doing for the previous several rounds. At an April 13 hearing, the Nevada State Athletic Commission fined Roger Mayweather $200,000 and revoked his boxing license for one year. Marc Ratner, executive director of the commission, said Zab's previous history in Nevada worked against him. Zab was suspended for six months and fined $75,000 following a 2001 TKO loss to Kostya Tszyu. Mayweather said he planned to fight again in September, a short turnaround for him, as part of a six-fight deal he has with the Showtime network." Offered here is an original, door key for this event issued by the host venue MGM Grand.

FULL DESCRIPTION: This is an original door key issued by the host venue MGM Grand. Baldomir won the WBC title, but he didn't get the WBA and IBF titles because he didn't pay them their required sanctioning fees. The WBA title was declared vacant, and Judah was allowed to keep the IBF title.
When Judah fought Baldomir, he was already scheduled to face Mayweather on April 8. They went ahead with the fight, but their deals changed significantly. Mayweather had been scheduled to earn a minimum $6 million, and Judah was to earn $3 million plus a percentage of the profits. Under the new deal, Mayweather would earn a minimum $5 million while Judah was guaranteed $1 million plus a percentage of profits above $7 million. In addition, host casinos Caesars Palace and Wynn Las Vegas reduced the amount of their promised ticket buy by $600,000. Promoter Bob Arum also reduced the top ticket price for the fight from $800 to $700. However, HBO kept the pay-per-view price at $44.95. There was a crowd of 15,170. The fight generated 374,000 pay-per-view buys and $16.8 million in pay-per-view revenue. Judah had success early in the fight, as his southpaw style and quickness gave Mayweather problems. At a hearing on May 8, the commission disciplined the other offenders in the melee. Zab Judah was fined $350,000 and had his license revoked for one year, Yoel Judah was fined $100,000 and had his license revoked for one year, and Leonard Ellerbe was fined $50,000 and had his license suspended for four months. Marc Ratner, executive director of the commission, said Zab's previous history in Nevada worked against him. Zab was suspended for six months and fined $75,000 following a 2001 TKO loss to Kostya Tszyu. After that loss, Zab was so enraged by referee Jay Nady's stoppage that he threw a ring stool at Nady and shoved a gloved hand under Nady's chin.
