Billy Papke was born on September 17, 1886 in Spring Valley, Illinois. During his career he fought Stanley Ketchel, Frank Klaus and Georges Carpentier. On September 7, 1908 in Vernon, California Papke stopped Ketchel in the 12th round to win the middleweight title. He retired with a record of 37-9-5. Papke died in 1936. Offered here is an original, wire photo of Billy Papke striking a sparring pose with world heavyweight champion Max Schmeling. Circa early 1930's.
