On February 5, 1943 at the Olympia in Detroit welterweights Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta fought in the featured bout. LaMotta prevailed winning a unanimous ten round decision, Robinson's first professional loss. Robinson was knocked down through the ropes in the eighth, being saved by the bell at the count of nine, after taking a right to the head and a left to the body. Referee Hennessey gave LaMotta five rounds including the last four. He gave Robinson four and called one even. Two other judges gave the same scores. The much heavier LaMotta charged Robinson at every opportunity with bull-like rushes. Robinson tried to outbox his shorter opponent but had a lot of trouble keeping him at bay. Offered here is an original wire photo which depicts 8th round action with LaMotta punching Robinson through the ropes.
