HISTORY: On September 9, 1978 at the Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island future world champion Sugar Ray Leonard fought Floyd Mayweather in the featured bout. Leonard stopped Mayweather in the 10th round. Leonard was ranked fifth by the WBA. Mayweather wasn't ranked in the WBA's top ten, but he was ranked sixth by The Ring.
The fight was televised live by ABC on Wide World of Sports. Mayweather complained after the fight that he had injured his right hand in the first round. Mayweather was knocked down twice in the eighth round. The Associated Press reported: "Aside from the first round, which Mayweather clearly won with good flurries of punches, the only round in which he held his own was the fifth. However, his punches had lost most of their zing by then."
