John L. Sullivan was born on October 15, 1858 in Roxbury, Boston, MA. He is the link between bare knuckles and glove fighting and is considered to be one of the best heavyweights ever. He held the undisputed World Heavyweight Boxing Championship for ten years, winning it in 1882 from Paddy Ryan and losing it in 1892 to James J. Corbett. Other notable fighters he fought and defeated included Jake Kilrain, Charlie Mitchell and Dominic McCaffrey. Offered here is an original poster of John L.Sullivan and other ring greats issued as a supplement to the New York Illustrated News on December 18, 1889.
This supplemnt poster features John L. Sullivan at the center surrounded by other ring greats. The photos of the fighters by John Wood of New York. 48 photos in all including: Peter Jackson, Tom King, Jack Dempsey (The Nonpareil), Billy Edwards, John Heenan, Ike Weir, Jake Kilrain, Paddy Ryan and numerous others. The poster has water stains at bottom, center and upper left corner. Small hole by lower shoulder of Nat Langham. Chip at bottom cenetr. Original folds. Bold, sharp images. Exceedingly rare.
