HISTORY: On February 7, 1956 at the Boston Garden world welterweight champion Wallace "Bud" Smith fought Larry Boardman in a non title fight. Boardman scored an upset winning a ten round split decision.

"Lightweight champion Wallace (Bud) Smith continued to look toward the welterweight ranks today while curbing his anger at the vote of the officials in his upset loss to a comparative unknown. Smith dropped a split decision to 19 year old Larry Boardman in a non-title 10 rounder last night at the Boston Garden. Smith floored Boardman for compulsory eight counts in the 1st and 9th rounds, but the young Connecticut battler came back swinging both times to earn the votes of two officials." -Associated Press. Boardman was a substitute for Tony DeMarco, who pulled out with a virus. That bout was rescheduled for March 5th. After this bout promoter Sam Silverman offered Smith $40,000 to defend his title against Boardman. Post fight comment-"Just say I'm plenty peeved, that's all. I think I won the fight easily and all I want to think about now is my fight here with Tony DeMarco next month." -Wallace (Bud) Smith, regarding the decision. Offered here is an original wire photo which depicts 5th round action during the fight.
