HISTORY: George Hackenschmidt - known as the 'Russian Lion' was born of German & Swedish descent in Estonia, once part of the USSR, now independent and rightly proud of its famous countryman. A 'strong-man' from the age of 18 he became a champion wrestler by 1900. He then continued an unrivalled career as a word-class wrestler, winning many prestigious awards. His career culminated in a match with the renowned Frank Gotch which he lost. He retired in 1911 and went on to write several books on both philosophy and physical culture. He remained in contact with the fight and strength fraternity. Hackenschmidt died at the age of 90, in London, in 1968. Presented here is an ink signed, large format, original, first generation photograph of George Hackenschmidt which he signed and inscribed to the founder and editor of The Ring, Nat Fleischer. From the collection of The Ring and Stanley Weston. Comes with a LOA from the Stanley Weston Archives.

FULL DESCRIPTION: This is an ink signed, large format, original, first generation photograph of George Hackenschmidt which he signed and inscribed to the founder and editor of The Ring, Nat Fleischer. This photo was taken by Anton Huber of Vienna. Dates to 1898. The same photograph, but in a smaller size, has Huber's backstamp in the lower right hand corner of the photograph. Bold, clear image. Not creased or torn. Boldly signed in fountain pen ink in lower right corner, "To Nat from George Hackenschmidt New York 10 17 39." 13" x 21 3/4." From the collection of The Ring and Stanley Weston. Comes with a LOA from the Ring Archives grandson of Stanley Weston. Exceptionally rare original large format photo and rarer still including a full signature of George Hackenschmidt.
