JoSportsInc

Regular price $6,000.00

On October 2, 1980 Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes fought former champion Muhammad Ali at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The aging Ali could not stand up to his talented former sparring partner and was systematically taken apart until the fight ended by TKO in round 11. Holmes was deeply upset the once great Ali had to absorb so much punishment before the fight was stopped. Offered here are original training trunks used by Muhammad Ali to prepare for his fight with Larry Holmes. The trunks were gifted by Muhammad Ali to Alan and Catherine Butler when they visited Ali's training camp in Deer Lake, Pennsylvania in 1980 as he trained for the Holmes fight. Catherine Butler was a friend of the Ali staff. Alan Butler's full letter recalling how he obtained the trunks is offered here. The trunks also come with a full letter from MEARS.
The trunks are white satin with black trim at the waistband and piping at each leg. There is a drawstring inside the waistband. On the front waistband at center there is a manufacturing label for Everlast which contains the logo, Made Expressly For MUHAMMAD ALI. There is no size tag, but these are clearly Large to XL. The waistband is stretched out from use. There is some color fading from aging. The trunks have some soiling and minor staining. Letters to support the trunks from original owner, Alan Butler and from MEARS.
