On June 10, 1935 at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. lightweights Frankie Klick and Tony Canzoneri battled in the main event. Canzoneri prevailed winning a close 12 round split decision. The verdict was greeted with loud protests by the 10,000 spectators, many of them Shriners attending their annual convention. The judges had disagreed, so referee Dempsey cast the deciding vote.
