Mike Gibbons was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 20, 1887. His first professional fight was on December 1, 1907 a win over Newsboy Brown. On May 18, 1916 Gibbons defeated Ted "Kid" Lewis to win a claim for the middleweight title. Gibbons fought and defeated many important fighters including Harry Greb, Mike O'Dowd, Jack Dillon, Jeff Smith, Eddie McGoorty and Jimmy Clabby. He retired after defeating Danny Fagan on May 16, 1922. His final record is 65-3-4. Gibbons passed away in 1931. Offered here is a circa 1920's original, colorized, large format photo of Mike Gibbons.
This photograph was done by National Studios of New York. The image is sharp and the color is bold. Photo has chipping at the corners and borders. No creasing. Mounted on heavy antique board. Some soiling. Extremely rare, especially in this size. 20" x 30."
