LISTON, SONNY-CHUCK WEPNER WIRE PHOTO (1970)

On June 29, 1970 at the Armory in Jersey City, New Jersey former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston fought Chuck Wepner, a local favorite and rising star. Liston stopped Wepner in the 9th round. Wepner was down in fifth from a body punch. The fight was stopped by ring doctor after round 9 because of multiple cuts on Wepner's face. This was the last fight for Sonny Liston. Offered here is an original wire photo depicting Liston landing a stiff jab on the head of Wepner.
