Regular price $300.00

HISTORY: On February 24, 1953, future undisputed world heavyweight champion Sonny Liston fought and won two separate bouts on the exact same day during the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. Having just earned early parole from prison late the previous year, Liston was tearing through the amateur ranks. His double-victory on this date served as a critical stepping stone toward winning the prestigious tournament.

Fight Details from February 24, 1953
Competing in the heavyweight division, Liston had to clear multiple hurdles in the early stages of the tournament:
  • Bout 1 vs. Donnie Fleeman: Liston won by a knockout in the 3rd round (KO 3).
  • Bout 2 vs. Carl McClure: Showing incredible endurance, Liston stepped back into the ring later that day and secured a 3-round decision victory (W 3).
The Tournament Trajectory
These two victories advanced Liston to the quarterfinals, launching an iconic amateur run over the next several days:
  • February 25, 1953 (Quarterfinals): Liston knocked out Tullos Lee Mead of Memphis in the second round.
  • March 6, 1953 (Semifinals & Finals): Liston defeated Ben Bankhead in the semifinals, then went on to defeat the 1952 Olympic Heavyweight Gold Medalist, Ed Sanders, by decision to win the Chicago Golden Gloves Championship.
Liston’s dominant performance during this winter tournament established his reputation as a terrifying force in the ring, ultimately prompting him to turn professional later that September.
