On December 14, 1936 at Public Hall in Cleveland future world heavyweight champion Joe Louis fought Eddie Simms, a replacement for local favorite Johnny Risko who was original scheduled. Louis dominated and stopped Simms in the first round. Referee Donovan stopped the bout because "another blow might have resulted fatally." This is the first time Simms had been knocked out in 52 contests. (AP). Offered here is an original wire photo depicting Simms down in the first round.
