On February 11, 1949 at Madison Square Garden in New York world featherweight champion Sandy Saddler defended his title against the man he won from four months earlier, Willie Pep. In this fight Pep put on a boxing exhibition and regained the title winning a unanimous 15 round decision. Offered here are the original fight gloves worn by Willie pep in this fight. The gloves were passed from pep to Bill Lee, sports writer for the Hartford Courant who had covered all of Pep's fights. Upon his death the gloves were returned to the Pep family who decided to sell them. Come with letters of authenticity from Jeff Lee (son of Bill Lee), Willie Pep's son and promoter Russell Peltz who sold them for the Pep family. Also come with photos of Pep wearing the gloves in the ring.
These gloves are 6 ounce, burgundy leather with Benlee manufacturing labels at each wrist. Initialed inside by the boxing commission. Have remnants of original laces. Well worn, but perfectly intact. No holes in the leather. The most significant pair of fight gloves used by Willie Pep to reach the market.
