He defeated Jake LaMotta on February 14, 1951 to win the World Middleweight Title. He would eventually win that title on four additional occasions. In a career which ran until 1965 he would claim victories over Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, Kid Gavilan, Bobo Olson, Rocky Graziano, Henry Armstrong and Randy Turpin. Presented here is a 1941 oversized original photograph of Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson.
This is an original 16" x 20" black and white photograph of World Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis and future champion Sugar Ray Robinson. This was done by Mitchell Studios of Cleveland in 1941 and has their raised stamp in the lower right corner. The two are shown holding a trophy awarded by ouis' horseracing entity Springboro Farm. This portrait indicates the importance of Robinson who at this time was a one year professional. There is some creasing in the lower left area and some edge wear around the perimeter. A magnificent image which is crisp and sharp.
