HISTORY: On June 28, 1966 at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Texas Ernie Terrell fought Doug Jones in a top ten heavyweight bout and for Terrell his 2nd defense of his WBA world heavyweight title.. Terrell would win a 15 round decision. Unofficial AP scorecard - 147-141 Terrell. Terrell was a 6 to 5 betting favorite. In the month preceding the fight, Associated Press interchangeably referred to either Jones or Zora Folley as WBA's No.2 heavyweight contender. A crowd of 9,346 produced a gate of $102,165. The fight was shown on closed circuit television in 70 theaters and arenas around the United States. There was no home television or radio. Purses: Terrell - $40,866 from the live gate and 42% of closed circuit TV for app. $250,000. Jones - $25,541 from the live gate and 20% of closed circuit TV for app. $125,000.
